Course Overview

Traffic Control is a high risk occupation and one that requires specific training around awareness and management of live sites.

This combination Traffic Control course provides required skills and knowledge for the Traffic Controllers to ensure the safety of traffic controllers, fellow workers, motorists and other road users as well as knowledge and skills to identify risks associated with planning for and implementing traffic control plans.

The Traffic Controller component of this course is a mandatory training requirement for persons involved in controlling traffic using a stop-slow bat or boom gate. The White Card component is the mandatory WHS training required prior to undertaking construction work.

Target Audience

This course is suitable for individuals seeking entry level roles on construction sites and / or live traffic control sites.


  • This course provides training and practical application to give you the confidence to work safely and effectively on a live traffic site.
  • This training meets the requirements for a SafeWork NSW Traffic Controller Card.

Learning Outcomes

You will learn about:

  • Risks to workers, motorists, road users and traffic controllers when conducting traffic control

  • RIIWHS205E - Control traffic with stop-slow bat
  • RIIWHS201E - Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
  • RIIRIS301E - Apply risk management processes
  • RIIWHS206 - Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs
  • RIIWHS302E - Implement traffic management plans
  • RIICOM201E - Communicate in the workplace
  • RIIWHS303 - Position, set up and program portable traffic control device
  • CPCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry

Entry Requirements

To access this funded program you need to be:

  • Aged 17-24
  • NOT enrolled in school
  • An Australian citizen or Permanent resident, Australian humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen;
  • Currently living in NSW

Students must also have language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skill sufficient to complete the course, for example, to read materials relevant to the course, participate in discussions and roleplays and read and interpret signage and simple workplace safety documents. This will be tested through a LLN quiz as part of the course entry process which will assist the College to determine the level of support the student will need to successfully complete your learning.

Accreditation & Award

On successful completion of this course which includes assessment using questions and practical demonstrations, you will be eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment in Traffic Control and Implement Traffic Control Plans with White Card.

You will also be eligible for a SafeWork NSW TCWT card for Traffic Controller and Implementer.
